The Jewish Genetic Disease Consortium is a group of 15 organizations that have come together in a cooperative spirit to promote education and awareness in the Jewish community about *autosomal recessive diseases that occur more frequently in the Ashkenazi Jewish (AJ) population. While these diseases, such as Canavan disease, do occur in the non-Jewish population, they are found with significantly greater frequency in the AJ population. The goal of the educational process is to increase awareness about all of these diseases and encourage testing for carrier status which will ultimately prevent the birth of affected children.
